Super interesting piece and so many great references. I really enjoyed the article by Dubberly and Pangaro. It reminded me a bit of the question with network science in sociology, and the scholars that built upon Luhmann's social systems theory to develop an approach to social networks that was truly sociological, such as Harrison White and Charles Tilly. And great mention of Christopher Alexander there! When I was writing/designing my Bachelor's Thesis, my then-advisor recommended I explored "A Pattern Language", but it was "The Nature of Order" that impacted me the most. Reading this, I realised once again how much his theory of wholeness shaped my understanding of the world and how to think about processes. I would say it was an important aspect, albeit indirectly, in drawing me to social systems theory these days.

After reading your newsletter, I also ended up getting ahold of Heinz Von Foerster's "Understanding Understanding" and I really enjoyed the chapter "Cybernetics of Cybernetics". It's quite interesting how many important realisations are hiding in tautologies we take for granted. I am editing a few paragraphs in the paper I'm writing because of that! Anyway, great piece :)
